Full arch implants and same day teeth
A plain language guide to replacing a whole upper or lower arch of teeth with a fixed set supported by a small number of implants.
What are full arch implants?
Full arch treatment replaces all of the teeth in the upper jaw, the lower jaw or both. Instead of one implant for each tooth, a small number of implants, often four to six, support a complete set of fixed teeth. The teeth are attached to the implants and are not removed at night like a traditional denture.
Same day teeth means that most patients have a temporary set of "smiling and talking" teeth placed within 24 hours of surgery, so you are not without teeth while you heal. These teeth are for esthetics and not for immediate function, because the implants require a healing period. The final set is made after healing.
Who it may help
Full arch treatment is often considered for people who have:
- Teeth that are failing from decay, gum disease or fractures
- Dentures that are loose, uncomfortable or hard to eat with
- Many missing teeth and a wish for a fixed, long term solution
What to expect
A full evaluation comes first, with a 3D scan, an exam and a conversation about your goals. Your surgeon, your restorative dentist and the dental lab plan the position of the implants and the design of the teeth together.
Surgery is commonly done in the office with IV sedation. Failing teeth are removed if needed, the implants are placed, and a temporary set of teeth is placed within 24 hours of surgery. You will follow a soft food diet while you heal.
After a healing period of a few months, your dentist completes the final teeth. Regular visits and good daily cleaning keep the result healthy.
Common questions
Will I have teeth on the day of surgery?
Most patients have a temporary set of "smiling and talking" teeth placed within 24 hours of surgery. These teeth are for esthetics and not for immediate function, because the implants require a healing period before they can handle normal chewing.
How is this different from dentures?
A traditional denture rests on the gums and is taken out to clean. Full arch teeth are held by implants in the bone and stay in place. Implant retained teeth generally give patients much more chewing efficiency and confidence than removable options.
Will I need a bone graft?
Not always. A 3D scan shows the amount and quality of your bone. Plans are often designed to make the best use of the bone you have, and grafting is added when it is needed.
What can I eat after surgery?
Plan on soft foods at first and avoid hard or chewy foods while the implants heal. Your team will give you a clear timeline for when to move on.
How do I care for full arch teeth?
Clean them every day with the tools your team recommends, such as a soft brush and a water flosser, and keep your regular cleanings and checkups. Good care is key to how long the result lasts.
Is the procedure done under sedation?
It is commonly done with IV sedation in the office, so you rest during the procedure. Your options are reviewed at your consultation.
